OpSkipper recognizes that successful marine operations require flexibility from every team member.
In the dynamic world of boat tours and charters, crew members often need to wear multiple hats, adapt to changing conditions, and step into different operational functions as needed. Our system is designed to support this reality by clearly distinguishing between permanent organizational positions and flexible trip-specific assignments, while ensuring safety and compliance standards are always maintained.
Job Titles
Job titles represent the permanent positions and expertise levels that crew members hold within your organization. These are what people are hired for and trained to perform, such as “Captain,” “First Mate,” “Marine Naturalist,” or “Deckhand.” Job titles reflect a crew member’s overall experience level, certifications, and general skill set. They remain relatively stable and are part of each crew member’s profile in the system. Importantly, job
titles also determine the default permission levels within the OpSkipper app – for example, crew members with “Mate” job titles cannot fill out captain’s logs, while those with “Captain” job titles have access to additional administrative functions. In the spirit of granularity, you can override permission levels for individuals, no matter their job title. You also determine the job titles your organization uses.
Assignment Roles
Assignment roles, on the other hand, are the specific operational functions that need to be filled for each individual trip or tour. These represent the functional responsibilities required for that particular departure, such as “Captain,” “Mate,” “First Mate,” “Trainee,” or “Scuba Instructor.” Assignment roles are defined by what the trip operationally needs – someone to captain the vessel, someone to assist as mate, someone to serve beverages, etc. Each trip will have specific assignment role requirements that must be filled based on the vessel, tour type, and operational needs. You determine the assignment roles for each tour type, and you can also adjust them for individual trips.
The Difference between Job Titles and Assignment Roles
The key distinction is that job titles determine who you are in the organization, while assignment roles determine what function you’re performing on a specific trip. A crew member with a “Captain” job title might fill a “mate” assignment role on a particular trip if that’s what’s needed operationally. Conversely, someone with a “Mate” job title might be qualified to fill a “Captain” assignment role on certain types of trips if they have the qualifications, but they would still maintain their “Mate” job title for payroll and app permission purposes. This separation allows for operational flexibility while maintaining clear organizational hierarchy and authority structures. For each assignment role you configure, you determine which job titles are eligible to fill it.
The Safety Net
OpSkipper uses internal qualifications to bridge the gap between job titles and assignment roles. These restrictions determine which crew members are available to fill which assignment roles on different types of trips. This ensures that only properly trained individuals are assigned to critical functions, regardless of their permanent job title.
This system provides both safety compliance and operational flexibility while maintaining proper authority structures. Job titles determine app permissions, assignment eligibility, and organizational hierarchy, while assignment roles ensure trips are properly staffed with the right functional expertise. The qualification system acts as the safety layer, ensuring that operational assignments always meet training and certification requirements. This approach allows you to maximize crew utilization while maintaining clear lines of authority and ensuring all safety standards are met.
